Health Benefits of Ocean Living
Nothing like island life, right? But did you know that living the #IslandLife and living by the ocean bring many health benefits, as well?
Here’s a few benefits we’ve found, with the sources linked.
Great for your lungs.
Scientific World Journal published a study in 2012 showing people with cystic fibrosis benefited from the salty air found the beach. This came about from Australian patients reporting an easier time breathing, per the Wall Street Journal.
In fact, living by the sea has long been thought of a way to bring health benefits. In the Victorian era, moving to the seaside was prescribed as a way to help those with breathing issues or even diseases such as tuberculosis.
Better brain
As Dr. Natashia Bijlani told to Metro, “Sea air is good for sleep because it’s generally cleaner and fresher.”
Because it’s cleaner, there’s higher rates of oxygen in every breath you take. But that’s not all.
A different study in Health Place, published in October of 2019, found that people in England living within 1 km (0.62 mi) of the coast were 22% less likely to have mental health symptoms vs. those living over 50 km (31 mi) away.
And as NBC News reports, a study in the Journal of Coastal Zone Management showed people living in homes with ocean views reported feeling calmer than those without them.
Healthier skin
As Woman & Home magazine reports, the ocean’s water contains many minerals that can boost skin health and even add that “glow” some people rave about after visiting the beach.
As they report:
“Seawater is rich in minerals like magnesium, zinc, iron, and potassium, which each alone have fantastic benefits,” says Dr Karen Davis, a certified physician assistant specializing in chronic skin conditions. “These minerals are anti-inflammatory, helping to heal and protect the skin barrier, so soaking in seawater is considered nature’s skin treatment. It’s great for sensitive skin or eczema-prone skin.”

Another study has found dry skin, after being soaked in water rich with magnesium, reduced inflammation. Ocean water for the win!
Seeing blue is good
Blue is known as a calming color. Hello, ocean water for the win!
As NBC News reported, Richard Shuster, PsyD, clinical psychologist says “The color blue has been found by an overwhelming amount of people to be associated with feelings of calm and peace,” says Shuster. “Staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves’ frequency and puts us into a mild meditative state.”
And studies have shown that blue provides a boost of creativity vs. other colors such as red.
